The June Open marked the final Chess A2Z tournament before the summer break, and it was a fantastic way to wrap up the first half of the year. We were excited to welcome 100 players for another day of competitive chess, learning, and community.
As always, it was wonderful to see a mix of returning players and first-time tournament participants. Many students demonstrated significant improvement from previous events, while others gained valuable tournament experience that will help them continue to grow. Between rounds, players could be found analyzing games, discussing ideas, and making new friends—one of the things we love most about our events.
Things ran smoothly throughout the day, and we are grateful to all the parents, volunteers, coaches, and supporters who helped make the tournament possible.
Special thanks to Oregon Chess Federation President and National Master Wilson Gibbins, our Coach-in-Residence John Hart, top scholastic players Karthik Bimod and Saahil Gupta, University of Texas Turing Scholar and longtime Oregon youth chess volunteer Ethan Zhang , and recent graduate Shreyans Purumandla for being onsite throughout the day.
