What to Bring to a Tournament

Getting ready for your first tournament doesn’t require much, but bringing the right items can make the day much smoother and more comfortable.

Essentials (Don’t Forget)

These are the most important items:

  • Water bottle
  • Light snacks (just in case)
  • A light jacket or sweater (rooms are often cold)
  • Scorebook and pencil (for sections that require notation)

Tip: Label your child’s belongings: many kids bring similar items.

At Chess A2Z Events

If you’re attending a Chess A2Z tournament, many items are already taken care of:

  • Free lunch provided (Costco pizza – cheese or pepperoni)
  • Snacks and drinks available for purchase on site
  • Chess sets and clocks provided
  • Notation sheets and pencils provided

This means you can keep things simple. Just bring your child and be ready to play.

Comfort Matters

Tournaments can be a long day, especially for younger players.

  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Get a good night’s sleep before the event
  • Keep expectations simple: focus on learning and enjoying the experience
Final Tip

You don’t need to overprepare. Most families forget something their first time and that’s okay.

Once you attend your first tournament, you’ll know exactly what works best for your child.
