Should My Child Play Up a Section?
This is one of the most common questions parents ask before a tournament.
The short answer: most players should play in their current rating section, especially in their first few tournaments.
What Does “Play Up” Mean?
Playing up means entering a higher section than your child’s current rating.
For example, a U400 player choosing to play in U700 or Open.
Our General Recommendation
For most players, especially beginners:
- Play in your current section
- Build confidence and experience
- Have competitive, balanced games
This leads to a more positive and productive tournament experience.
When Does It Make Sense to Play Up?
Playing up can be a good idea if:
- Your child is consistently winning in their current section
- Their rating is close to the next section
- They are comfortable handling stronger opponents
In these cases, playing up can provide a new challenge.
Things to Consider
Higher sections can be much more competitive.
- Your child may lose more games than usual
- It can be a great learning experience but also frustrating
Every child is different. Some enjoy the challenge, while others benefit more from building confidence first.
Final Tip
If you’re unsure, it’s usually better not to play up for your first few tournaments.
There will always be opportunities to move up as your child improves.
