How Sections Work

At a chess tournament, players are divided into different sections. This helps create fair and competitive games for everyone. 

What Is a Section?

A section is a group of players with similar skill levels, usually based on rating.

At Chess A2Z tournaments, common sections include:

  • U400
  • U700
  • U1000
  • Open (Open I, Open II)

This way, beginners don’t have to play against very advanced players, and everyone gets a better experience.

How Are Sections Determined?

Sections are usually based on your child’s USCF rating.

  • If your child has a rating → they are placed based on that number
  • If your child is new → they will be placed in an appropriate beginner section

Tournament organizers may adjust slightly to make pairings more balanced. 

What Happens Inside a Section? 

Each section runs like its own mini tournament.

  • Players only play against others in the same section
  • There are usually 4 or 5 rounds
  • Pairings are based on results from previous rounds

This means your child will usually face opponents with similar scores as the tournament goes on.

Can Players Move Between Sections?

In most cases, players stay in the same section for the entire tournament.

Section changes are usually not allowed after the event starts, since it would affect pairings and fairness.

  • More enjoyable, especially for beginners

Good section placement leads to better games and a better overall experience.
