Oregon Junior Open 2026

The inaugural Oregon Junior Open was held September 5–6, 2026, in Portland, Oregon, alongside the 76th Oregon Open. Organized by Chess A2Z, the Oregon Chess Federation, and the Portland Chess Club, the event brought together 102 young chess players from Oregon, Washington, and California for a full Labor Day weekend of competition.

The turnout for the first Oregon Junior Open demonstrated the strength and enthusiasm of Oregon’s growing junior chess community. We hope this event will become an annual Labor Day tradition and give generations of young players something to work toward each year. Chess A2Z will maintain a permanent record of the Oregon Junior Open champion in each section each year, recognizing the players who become part of Oregon chess history.

The weekend also included a special moment for Chess A2Z. Chess A2Z founder Zoey Tang was presented with the 2026 US Chess Federation Young Player of the Year Award, recognizing her achievements, growth, and contributions to the chess community.

A huge thank-you to the Oregon Chess Federation, Portland Chess Club, tournament directors, volunteers, parents, coaches, and players who helped make the first Oregon Junior Open possible. We look forward to seeing everyone back at the board next year!
